Dive Brief:
- Applied CleanTech (ACT) has announced the results of a collaboration with Scottish Water. The two companies worked on a pilot project in order to test ACT’s sewage recycling technology using wastewater. The results? A success, according to the company.
- Engineers at Scottish Water conducted tests to determine if value could be extracted from sewage, while at the same time reducing maintenance expenses and cutting down on operating costs by as much as 30%.
- The San Diego, CA-based wastewater development company uses a proprietary material, Recyllose, to reduce the amount of sewage sludge at treatment plants.
Dive Insight:
The process uses technology that first collects cellulose and fats that arrive at the wastewater treatment plant. Solids are then pasteurized using the Recyllose pellets, which can then be used as a raw material in paper, plastic, construction, or energy for other industries.
