Dive Brief:
- Du Pont Industrial Biosciences and EcoStrate SFS Inc. have announced a new collaboration in which the two companies will create a post-consumer recycling program for carpet made from Du Pont’s Sorona renewable fiber.
- The companies expect to develop and produce products using the Sorona fiber, which will be made from both consumer and commercial carpets.
- EcoStrate’s role is to determine other ways to transform the recycled materials into something new, such as flooring, crates for shipping, pallets, and building materials.
Dive Insight:
The fiber recycling program is touted as the first of its kind by the companies. Sonora is a bio-based material that Du Pont says is recyclable. In fact, the company has been recycling the material after industrial use. But Du Pont was also looking for additional methods it could use on carpet collected from consumers.
