Figures released by ecoATM cite a 20% recycling rate for cell phones annually, while consumers upgrade their devices an average of once every 18 months. The company says it has paid out over $3 million to residents for around 200,000 old devices in San Diego county alone.
The company has proven so popular with consumers that it continues adding kiosks to cities, and has units in at least 42 states. In April, the recycler expanded into Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, installing 16 additional kiosks for a total of 32 units, doubling the number of receptacles previously placed in that area alone.
