- This marks the second town in Mercer County to establish a curbside food recycling program.
- The program was initially slated to take off earlier. In December 2013, the council awarded the five-year organics contract to Central Jersey Waste and Recycling of Ewing. However, the town did not have the minimum number of residents participating in the program to get it underway.

Tahirih Smith, the executive director of Sustainable Lawrence, said, “One of our initial goals is not so much about sacing money or producing compost. This is just a step toward thinking about the way we produce waste.”
Residents in nearby Princeton, NJ are four years into an organics waste program. Initially established as a pilot program, it became so popular that it is now restricted to 2,000 applicants.
