Dive Brief:
- The Delaware County Waste Management in Walton, NY, recently received an overhaul: an advanced Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) was added onto the facility.
- The cost of construction totaled $7.5 million.
- The site is now capable of processing a greater range of recyclables, reducing the residual waste that wasn’t able to be recycled at the plant prior to the upgrade.
Dive Insight:
Before the MRF was in operation, the volume of waste disposed of at landfills measured at 40 yards per day. Now, the volume of waste has dwindled to 40 yards per every 10 days.
The addition of the MRF is expected to extend the life of the landfill by 20 years. Sue McIntyre, the director of the Delaware County Waste Management facility, said this timeframe has the potential to extend beyond that estimate if the community gets on board with increasing recycling.
