- Beginning on October 1, Sony will start selling its Sustainable Oriented Recycled Plastic, dubbed SORPLAS, to manufacturers.
- SORPLAS is a flame-retardant polycarbonate plastic comprised of recyclables such as optical discs from DVDs and optical sheets used for LCD flat screens. The plastic is made of up to 99% recycled materials.
- Sony says that it is marketing SORPLAS to companies in Japan and other foreign markets in an effort to promote recycling and environmental coservation.

Sony cites many advantages to SORPLAS. First, it’s flame retardant and the conventional properties of the plastic are not lost in the process -- even after being recycled countless times.
Sony also touts the plastic's low rate of CO2 emissions, citing a smaller impact on the environment. The company was also quick to clarify that it would still be offering the recycled plastic at competitive rates.
