Dive Brief:
- Elected officials in Washington County, UT, have voted in favor of introducing a curbside recycling program.
- Community leaders hope the new program will push a greater number of residents to recycle.
- The initiative will be handled by the Washington County Solid Waste District, with final approval needed from individual governments prior to adopting the program.
Dive Insight:
Currently, the community drops off recyclables at a receptacle installed at various locations. Residents have the ability to opt out of the collection program. The county also chose a hauler, Dixie Waste, to oversee the recycling services. The company beat out Republic Services for the contract; elected leaders went with Dixie because it is locally owned and some of its costs came in lower.
