May 14: The most recent update to this tracker is private equity firm Firmament’s acquisition of West Virginia-based Whitecap Waste.
The company was sold by another private equity firm, Mollitiam Holdings. Whitecap, which was founded in 2020, services an estimated 30,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers. It grew through the consolidation of local companies Beckley Garbage, Dave's Sanitation and Oak Hill Garbage. Michael Schmidt will remain president of the company.
GFL Environmental also recently acquired Home Town Environmental, a small hauler servicing the Fort St. John, British Columbia, market. The transaction closed May 1.
Canada-based E360S, a portfolio company of BlackRock, also announced a string of recent deals. The company has acquired H2O Traitements Industriels and MDR Traitements Industriels, EZ Bins, Ruby Environmental, Conteneurs CES and others.
The waste and recycling industry's M&A activity has neared historic levels in recent years.
Collective M&A spending by the U.S. solid waste industry's publicly traded companies approached an estimated $4.2 billion in 2023 and $6.3 billion in 2022. This total does not include deals involving companies with private equity or infrastructure fund backing, which have become increasingly active in recent years.
