Apple has filed its plans to build the 5 MW fuel cell project in Maiden, North Carolina, that will utilize biogas to offset its use of natural gas and qualify as a renewable facility.
According to Apple's, the commissioning of its new data center in Maiden is part of its commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its facilities through energy efficient, green building design. The company said that the facility is exceptionally energy efficient and has earned the coveted LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
When the fuel cell portion is completed, the data center will be the largest non-utility owned fuel cell operation in the United States.
