Dive Brief:
- A seven-mile methane gas pipeline project in Orono, Maine will not be built due to financing issues.
- Casella Waste Systems Inc. and the University of Maine were planning to use the pipeline to produce inexpensive, renewable heat for campus buildings. A fuel agreement was reached in November of 2011, after three years of negotiations.
- The pipeline was expected to cost between $11 million and $13.5 million to construct. Casella recently decided it could not finance the project.
Dive Insight:
The landfill produces 8,000 gallons of heating oil daily. Casella will continue looking for a buyer for the methane released at the state-owned landfill site.
