Dive Brief:
- Officials in Coachella, CA will weigh the results of a three-month study conducted to find a solution for organic waste and recycling.
- The proposed plan going before city council could potentially ban composting facilities while consolidating the organic waste and recycling to one district in the town.
- Under a sample ordinance limiting recycling to a specific district, each business that is approved would then be subject to an in-depth review conducted by the city.
Dive Insight:
David Garcia, the Coachella City Manager said that regulations are necessary due to a community concerns surrounding area waste plants. Garcia said recycling and waste centers are "something we need to regulate," as the town does not currently have any zoning regulations regarding recycling and compost practices.
The city is reviewing ordinances in other California cities for additional insight. A little over 100 miles away, Pomona, CA is considering its own ordinance prompted by fires at local plants, and propelled by what some in that town see as an abundance of waste and recycling facilities.
