Dive Brief:
-
Mississippi Industrial Waste, a subsidiary of Waste Pro USA, announced it will stop offering its residential recycling program on Sept. 30 due to the cost associated with the service.
-
Citing low demand, high transportation costs and the inability to separate single-stream recyclables in a profitable manner, the company sees the move as necessary.
-
The 600 customers effected by this change reside in Columbus, Miss., and will be able to bring recyclables to one of six designated recycling centers.
Dive Insight:
In the end, the $300,000 costs of the soon-to-be-defunct curbside collection couldn't be justified by its low participation rate. Offering those who did participate an alternative is a good move, but will they still go through the trouble when they have to put in additional effort to make drop-offs?
