Dive Brief:
- The US federal government is the biggest electronics consumer and waste creator in the nation, according to Triple Pundit.
- As a response to the large volumes of waste, there will be a big push to recycle, refurbish and discard electronics on a federal level. According to Triple Pundit, the General Services Administration (GSA) has established a new rule to move the government forward in its goals.
- The proposal by the GSA includes eliminating landfilling and incinerators to dispose of e-waste, repurposing and re-using electronics, donating unwanted items to other offices or institutions, and selling old equipment. As a last resort, e-waste can be brought to authorized e-waste recyclers.
Dive Insight:
It is estimated that around 2.7 million government employees contribute a huge amount of waste to the 2.4 million tons of e-waste thrown out in the US each year. As reported by Triple Pundit, the GSA says data collected from all e-waste discarded, donated or otherwise, will be available on Data.gov at some point.
