• In an announcement, a spokesman for the Fall River Industrial Park in Massachusetts, said that the landfill will be shut down by the end of 2014.
• Allied Waste submit a plan to close the site, which was approved by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).  
• Various approaches are being discussed about how to shutter the landfill. Solutions include privatizing the trash and recycling services, a city-operated transfer station and a "pay as you throw" system in which residents pay per bag to dispose of trash.

Less than a month ago, Republic Services was given approval by the DEP to build a solid waste transfer station at the site of the landfill. At that time, the landfill had been expected to close, but plans were not finalized.
