Materials recovery facility opens in Bakersfield, Calif.

Dive Brief:

  • Metropolitan Recycling in Bakersfield, California, is now officially open. The $12 million facility held its grand opening on April 16, 2014.
  • The materials recovery facility (MRF) is capable of processing 20 tons of recyclables per hour.
  • Five waste companies came together, under the umbrella of Metropolitan Recycling LLC., to oversee the plant.

Dive Insight:

The new MRF will take the town of Bakersfield one step loser to reaching a statewide goal set for 2020- to divert 75% of recyclable materials from landfills.
