Dive Brief:

• Trash collected from Canada was on the rise at Michigan landfills, while residents of the state disposed of less volume in state landfills than the last fiscal year.
• A state Department of Environmental Quality report showed that waste collected from within the state dropped by 0.5% and trash from Canada increased by 13%.
• Canadian waste comprises 17% of the garbage in Michigan landfills. 6% is generated by other states.

Michigan landfills accepted 45 million cubic yards of trash for the time period ending in September of 2013. This was an increase of 1.4% over the previous year.
