- The French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana will have curbside recycling by the end of January. The Central Business District will also reinstate its curbside recyclables program.
- Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration announced a deal with Progressive Waste Solutions: the city will extend its contract with the solid waste hauler through 2014 in exchange for implementing weekly recycling services in the area.
- The tourist destination has been without recycling pick-up for over eight years, since Hurricane Katrina natural disaster devastated the surrounding area. 4,062 residences and businesses will now have service.
Dive Insight:
Before the negotiations, Progressive's seven year contract with the city was scheduled to end in 2013. The collections in this section of the city require serialized trucks. Progressive's contract includes cleaning the streets after major events for an additional $45,000 in fees. Tonnage fees are topped at $30.49 per ton at no more than 408 tons per month, according to the agreement.
