Dive Brief:

• The toxic Hyde Park Landfill has been removed from the federal list of contaminated sites; it was placed on the list in 1983 when cleanup first began.
• Federal regulators removed the site as it no longer poses a threat to the environment or public health.
• ​The agency will continue to monitor conditions and the Department of Environmental Conservation will get monthly reports which monitor the state of the site.

Dive Insight:

The landfill was used to bury chemical waste  from 1953 until 1975. 80,000 tons of waste found at the landfill contained dioxin; volatile organic compounds were also discovered at the site. The landfill clean-up was finished 10 years ago.
