Dive Brief:
- New York City has launched E-cycleNYC, an e-waste collection program for apartment buildings.
- A total of 12,463 units from 50 buildings are currently signed up to participate in the program.
- The program, a private/public collaboration between the New York City Department of Sanitation and Electronic Recyclers International Inc., is a complimentary service for taxpayers and enrolled buildings.
Dive Insight:
State law currently requires electronics manufacturers to fund the collection program through the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act. In 2015, it will become illegal to dispose of e-waste in the trash in New York City. The program will accept most electronics and offers buildings different options based on the amount of units in the complex, including room clean-outs, bins and outdoor recycling events.
