Dive Brief:
- A landfill owned by the city of Brooklyn, Ohio must close by 2016. The closure stems from an agreement with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
- Waste was discovered outside of the landfill's boundaries years ago. The site exceeded its vertical limits in 2007, while its horizontal limits were found to be in violation in 2009.
- Brooklyn must now create a plan outlining the permanent closure of the site. Daily operations at the landfill ended in 2010. The city was also hit with a $30,000 fine.
Dive Insight:
The city says it remains unclear about the length of time the violations lasted and how the boundary breach occurred in the first place. Citing its reservations about the issues, the City Law Director has said that litigation against URS Corporation, the city's former management consultant, has not been ruled out.
