Dive Summary:
- The operator of the Lakeside Reclamation Landfill, Grabhorn Inc. and its insurer have reached a settlement with the Department of Environmental Quality to the tune of $7 million.
- The settlement will be used to clean up contamination from the landfill that could potentially threaten wildlife near the Tualatin River.
- The landfill is unlined and was closed in 2009 under mounting pressure from the state and surrounding community.
From the article:
This settlement followed a federal lawsuit filed in 2008 under the Clean Water Act and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act by Friends of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge and the Northwest Environmental Defense Center.
Friends of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge said in a release that contamination from the landfill reaches 45 feet below the ground and extends about 1,400 feet along Tualatin River.
Before the lawsuit, Grabhorn was working with DEQ to study the landfill conditions and to prepare for its closure, said Patrick Rowe, an attorney for Grabhorn.
