Dive summary:
- Residents of Dartmouth, Mass. are concerned with a Brockton company’s plan to bury Cecil Smith Landfill, which is right next to the Shingle Island River and surrounded by wetlands, under 1.4 million tons of contaminated soil.
- The town’s Select Board and Board of Health have no authority over the decision although the public will have an opportunity to submit comments.
- The company in charge of the project wants to start hauling in the 66,000 truckloads of dirt in May.
From the article:
Officials said they believe the fill destined for the 452 Old Fall River Road landfill will come from former industrial sites or the remnants of demolished buildings in the greater Boston area, although no one knows for sure yet, Henderson said.
The landfill cap will reach a height of 65 feet by the time Boston Environmental finishes the project, Henderson said.
The contaminated soil will be topped by a membrane, then capped by sand and other clean materials. A layer of vegetation will finish off the cap, DEP spokesman Ed Coletta said.
Coletta added that the plan is conceptual at this point and can change in response to comments from DEP, the town or the public after Boston Environmental presents it Thursday. ...
