Rizzo scraps new landfill plans for Michigan

Dive Brief:

  • Rizzo Environmental Services, a waste and recycling hauler in the Detroit area, has announced it has squashed its proposal for a new landfill in the New Haven, Michigan area.
  • According to Crain's Detroit Business, CEO Chuck Rizzo said the company expects to stop its option agreement on the land it had proposed for a landfill.
  • Rizzo said that market conditions in Southeastern Michigan have changed since its initial plans for the landfill.

Dive Insight:

Probable factors include its new hauling and recycling contract with Detroit. The company will most likely bring trash to a waste-to-energy plant within the city limits, instead of trucking it to another county. In addition, a neighboring county may soon begin to accept waste, which would have been competition for Rizzo's landfill.
