Sims Recycling lays off employees in Dallas

Dive Brief:

  • Sims Recycling Solutions plans to lay off 45 employees at its Dallas, TX site.
  • According to Dallas Business Journal, Sims said weak financial performance is the reason behind the layoffs.
  • The electronics recycler plans to close its Dallas location by July 31, 2015.

Dive Insight:

The company is letting go of 20 full-time employees. In addition, 25 contingent workers will also be laid off. Dallas Business Journal reported that some employees can relocate to alternate branches. Despite e-waste's growth potential in emerging markets, electronics recycling is floundering in some states as the cost of processing skyrockets, leaving recyclers with diminished profits. That said, the e-waste industry expects to reach $41.36B by 2019, and new plants continue to open.
