- Detectives, police and the city fire marshall in Redwood City, California are investigating the cause of a fire at the Sims Metal Management recycling plant.
- The incident occurred on December 17, 2013. A loud explosion was heard by employees, who then called emergency responders.
- Investigators think the fire was intentionally started. City Manager Robert Bell sent a letter to the California Department of Toxic Waste voicing his concern about the cause of the fire. The city sent Sims a directive to begin additional safety prevention measures immediately.
