Dive Brief:
- Sims Municipal Recycling has installed a commercial-scale wind turbine in New York City on the waterfront at the Sunset Park Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). The dedication ceremony will be held onsite on Wednesday.
- The turbine will generate electricity for the Sunset Park MRF in Brooklyn, NY. Sims expects the turbines to generate up to 4% of the energy the MRF uses.
- The facility produces up to 20% of its electricity from renewable resources.
Dive Insight:
The turbine cost $750,000 and was installed in the fall of 2014. The turbine is expected to pay for itself within five years, depending upon wind production and electricity costs.
The Sunset Park MRF began operation in December 2013. The facility processes recyclables collected throughout New York City. Sims was awarded the contract to handle recycling for the city in September of 2013.
