Dive Brief:
-
The San Joaquin County supervisors vetoed a proposal to expand Allied Waste's Forward landfill in Stockton, California amid concerns of odors, the local agricultural industry, pollution and birds.
-
Due to the proximity to the Stockton Metropolitan Airport, it would have been a hazard for planes taking off and landing if birds frequented the landfill.
-
The downside of not expanding the landfill is that the county will lose tipping fees and may see an increase in trash rates, in addition to a potential loss of jobs as the current site reaches capacity.
Dive Insight:
A solution must now be found to address where the county's trash will end up after the Forward landfill is closed in the next eight years.
