Norfolk, VA – Keep Norfolk Beautiful, Recycling Perks and TFC Recycling conducted their first Carton Collection Challenge.
The challenge was for Norfolk Public School 3rd grade classrooms to collect the most cartons and Recycling Perks sign-ups. A pizza party as well as monetary donations were at stake. This fun challenge was designed to be easily integrated into the 3rd grade math SOL with percentages and charts, while encouraging classrooms to work together.
“We want to work now with the next generation in order to prepare a clean, sustainable and healthy environment for the future” explains Sandra Hungate, Vice-President of Recycling Perks.
The 1st place winning class, Ms. Cooper’s class from Southside S.T.E.M. Academy at Campostella has proven through their amazing efforts how much fun it is to learn and be great stewards of the environment. Using their math and science skills, the students managed to collect 1,826 cartons! The 2nd place class was Ms. Henderson’s class from Southside S.T.E.M. Academy at Campostella with 1,590 cartons. On the other side of the City, was the 3rd place class: Ms. Worden’s class from Mary Calcott Elementary who collected 153 cartons.
Recycling Perks and Keep Norfolk Beautiful were honored to meet these kids on Monday, after letting the participating students throw their recyclables into the recycling. To further empower the children, a local superstar, the Recycling Rock Star, attended the ceremony and gave superhero capes to the 1st place winning class, and smaller goodies to the other winners.
