Temu has signed an agreement with Electrão, a producer responsibility organization (PRO) in Portugal, to support sellers in fulfilling their extended producer responsibility (EPR) obligations under national and European Union environmental regulations.
This cooperation aims to ensure that packaging, batteries, and electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) sold through Temu are properly collected and recycled in accordance with EU environmental practices.
Through this framework, sellers on Temu can easily integrate into established recycling systems to contribute to the costs of recycling.
“The registered producers can benefit from the accumulated experience of a multi-stream Producer Responsibility Organization like Electrão,” says Electrão’s CEO Pedro Nazareth. “With our established operational capacity, we are fully prepared to support sellers in fulfilling their obligations.”
Through the partnership, consumers in Portugal can access collection points operated by Electrão for the recycling of packaging, batteries, and EEE purchased on Temu. Consumers are encouraged to visit www.ondereciclar.pt for information on nearby locations where they can properly dispose of waste for recycling.
“This collaboration provides sellers with a more straightforward pathway to meet local compliance requirements while making it easier for consumers to contribute to a circular economy,” said a Temu spokesperson. “We aim to offer practical guidance and support to help sellers navigate evolving regulatory frameworks.”
Temu has established cooperation with more than 50 PROs across the EU, covering categories including packaging, batteries, and WEEE.
Since entering the Portuguese market in 2023 and opening its marketplace to European sellers in 2024, Temu has provided a cost-effective channel for businesses to reach new customers and scale across the continent. Temu was recently awarded the “2026 Recommended Brand” (Marca Recomendada), a recognition based on consumer satisfaction rankings from Portal da Queixa, Portugal’s leading consumer platform.
