Temu has expanded its partnership with Zaļā josta, the Latvian producer responsibility system company, to manage textile products sold on the global e-commerce platform and facilitate seller compliance with environmental regulations in the country.
The agreement builds upon the initial partnership established between the two in April this year, which covered Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements for packaging and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Under the expanded framework, Zaļā josta will fulfill the EPR registration and reporting obligations for textile products sold on Temu in Latvia.
Through the partnership, sellers on Temu contribute directly to Latvia's localized textile collection and management infrastructure, supporting the appropriate sorting, reuse, and recycling of these goods at the end of their lifecycle.
"This agreement is another significant step and a practical contribution to improving the circulation of textile products in Latvia," said Jānis Lapsa, Chairman of the Management Board of Zaļā josta. “The more market participants get involved in the producer responsibility system, the greater the opportunities to increase collection volumes, promote waste sorting, and reduce the amounts of textiles that end up in landfills.”
As part of the cooperation, residents in Latvia can dispose of unwanted clothing bought from Temu at any of the 432 designated collection points across the country, a list of which can be found at www.videspratiba.lv. To support these efforts, Zaļā josta's partner, the waste management company CleanR, has installed more than 350 textile containers throughout Latvia, collecting over 1,500 tons of textiles for recycling last year alone.
"Following our successful cooperation on packaging and WEEE, expanding our partnership with Zaļā josta makes it easier for sellers on Temu to meet local environmental requirements," said a Temu spokesperson. “Our goal is to provide practical guidance and resources to help sellers comply with EPR requirements.”
Temu has established partnerships with more than 60 licensed producer responsibility organizations across the European Union, covering categories such as packaging, batteries, waste electrical and electronic equipment, and textiles. These partnerships help sellers comply with the obligations of the extended producer responsibility system and support local collection and recycling systems.
