Dive Brief:
- Alcoa, the third largest manufacturer of aluminum in the world, signed a contract to provide aluminum sheets and plates to Boeing, a multinational corporation involved in designing and producing aircraft.
- The contract is worth an estimated $1 billion, and is one of the biggest contracts the two have entered into together. The companies have been involved in partnerships for the past 35 years.
- Alcoa will act as Boeing’s only supplier for parts such as wing skins on all of the corporation’s metallic structure airplanes.
Dive Insight:
The deal further solidifies the foundation between the two companies for continued collaborations. In June 2013, Boeing and Alcoa established a new program that would see Alcoa recycling the aluminum from Boeing planes. Up to eight million pounds of aluminum aerospace alloy from wings and fuselages would be recycled per year under that initiative.
