Dive Insight:
Tubby's story is a reminder that anyone—even dogs—can make a difference through recycling. Tubby was first awarded his Guinness World Record recognition for recycling 26,000 plastic bottles, yet his efforts nearly doubled after receiving the award (regardless of his world-renowned fame).
Other unlikely characters have been making headlines in their efforts to boost recycling, such as Pan, a third grader from Houston. Pan was upset that the city and Waste Management couldn't work out a new recycling contract that included glass recycling, so he took it upon himself to start a glass recycling business and make as much of an impact as possible.
No matter size or experience in the industry, Tubby and Pan have proven that everyone can have a significant voice—or bark—when it comes to creating change.
"We're sad to hear the news about Tubby, it was a pleasure to have him feature in the book. His love for recycling was inspiring to many children and adults alike. It was a unique record and we are honored to have been able to verify his achievement in the community," said a spokesman from Guinness World Records, as reported in South Wales Argus.
