Dive Brief:
- The Colorado legislature passed a bill that requires paint manufacturers to run — and pay for — a return program for consumers' leftover paint, Waste 360 reports.
- If the governor signs the bill into law, Colorado would be the eighth state to pass a paint stewardship law.
- An added fee, tacked onto cans at retailers, will fund the paint collection program.
Dive Insight:
According to Waste 360, all paint manufacturers will be required by law to register with the program. PaintCare Inc. is in charge of establishing the fund and managing the program. PaintCare is a non-profit that represents paint manufacturers.
Oregon and Minnesota are two of the seven state that passed paint recycling laws in 2013. In Oregon, the program pilot state, PaintCare collected 50% more paint and containers in the inaugural two years of the program.
