Dive Brief:
- Corporate Responsibility (CR) Magazine has listed Waste Management as No. 54 on the 100 Best Corporate Citizens 2015 list. The list ranks companies on the following seven categories: environment, climate change, employee relation, human rights, corporate governance, financial performance, and philanthropy.
- "The recognition here goes to our 40,000 teammates who take great pride in doing the right thing, safely servicing our customers and making our communities better places in which to live," said Waste Management CEO David Steiner in a statement.
- The top five companies on the list are Microsoft Corp., Hasbro Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Xerox Corp., and Sigma-Aldrich Corp., respectively.
Dive Insight:
Landing a spot on this list is not the only way Waste Management has been honored as of late. Earlier this month, the Ethisphere Institute included Waste Management on a list of the world's 131 most ethical companies—with WM being the only environmental service company on the list.
Despite some business struggles—including faltering recycling operations and some job outsourcing—being recognized with such titles reflects Waste Management's ability to push through difficult times and keep internal operations strong and successful.
"The work [our employees] do makes a big difference and we’re honored to receive this recognition; I only wish the listing had space for all 40,000 of our employees’ names!" said Steiner in a statement.
In compiling the list, CR Magazine evaluated 1,000 of the largest public companies in the US, according to the Russell 1000 index.
