The U.S. EPA has enacted numerous changes to how it will manage greenhouse gas emissions and PFAS, and those decisions are likely to have ripple effects in the waste and recycling industry.
Waste Dive staff Megan Quinn, Jacob Wallace and Cole Rosengren partnered with waste education nonprofit be Waste Wise for a March 31 webinar to break down key changes.
Recent updates include changes to municipal waste combustion rules, refreshed renewable fuel standards, and the rollback of the “endangerment finding,” a key underpinning for greenhouse gas regulations.
Meanwhile, ongoing court cases could determine how the EPA limits certain PFAS in drinking water and how it designates certain PFAS as hazardous substances. At the same time, new and emerging technologies could boost business for PFAS destruction and disposal. Lingering questions about PFAS in biosolids are also up in the air.
All of these updates are happening as the agency adjusts to major cuts to staffing levels, which could affect ongoing PFAS research and other initiatives.
Stay tuned for another be Waste Wise webinar on June 16 where Waste Dive staff will discuss the latest state and federal recycling policy trends.
