After deciding that the rewards program did not significantly increase recycling within the city, Ann Arbor, Michigan voted yesterday to cancel their contract with Recyclebank.
After garnering some favorable contract revisions, the council had previously voted to renew the contract in September. After further deliberation, however, the coupon based recycling program was eliminated last night in an 8-3 vote.
Each year, the program cost the city $103,500 to run. There will be a one time total cost of $107,200 to cancel the contract. This includes a $17,200 sixty day notice cancelation fee. Annual savings are expected in future years.
The potential impact to local landfills was not reported.
